What BothSides does
BothSides is a Chrome extension that analyzes news articles for bias and presents multiple perspectives. When you click Analyze, the extension extracts article data from the current page and sends it to our server for AI-powered analysis.
What data is collected
When you click Analyze, the extension sends the following to BothSides servers at bothsides.golabs.tech:
- The article title
- The article text/content
- The author/byline, if available
- The site name, if available
- The page URL
No data is sent until you click the Analyze button. BothSides does not run in the background, track your browsing, or collect data from pages you do not explicitly analyze.
How the data is processed
Your article data is forwarded to a third-party AI provider to generate the analysis. The AI provider used may change over time and may include services such as Anthropic (Claude), OpenAI (GPT), xAI (Grok), or others. Your data is sent to the provider's API as part of an analysis prompt and is subject to that provider's privacy policy. We select providers whose APIs do not use your inputs for model training.
Data retention and storage
- Article content, titles, URLs, prompts, and AI responses are not stored on BothSides servers. They are held in memory only for the duration of the request and discarded when the response completes.
- BothSides does not maintain a database of analyzed articles or user activity.
- Server infrastructure logs (managed by Vercel) may record request metadata such as timestamps, IP addresses, HTTP status codes, and response times. These logs are retained by Vercel per their standard log retention policy (typically up to 72 hours) and do not contain article content, prompts, or AI responses.
- A daily request counter is maintained for rate-limiting purposes. It stores only a count of total requests per day and expires automatically after 24 hours. It contains no article content or identifying information.
What is not collected
- BothSides does not create user accounts or profiles.
- BothSides does not use cookies or tracking pixels.
- BothSides does not collect or store personal information beyond what is described above.
Data sharing and advertising
Your article data is never sold or shared with advertisers. Article data is shared only with the AI provider as described above, solely to generate your analysis. The extension may display ads in the future; if it does, those ads will not be based on or have access to the articles you analyze.
Analytics and abuse prevention
BothSides uses a global daily request counter for rate limiting to prevent abuse and manage costs. This counter tracks only the total number of requests per day, not individual users or articles. No analytics platform or third-party tracking service is used.
Security
All communication between the extension, BothSides servers, and AI providers occurs over HTTPS. Article content is validated and sanitized before processing. No article data is written to persistent storage.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the effective date at the top will be updated. Continued use of the extension after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
